Warrior Culture-the samurai

I came across a few documentaries about the Edo period of Japan.

Edo period better known as the Tokugawa period is the age of the Samurai.

The Edo period is a violent time in Japan, a feudal state where warlords were in a constant feud to vie for power. The strongest warlord is elected the Shogun or general.

The Samurai follows a code of bushido. For the samurai, they are professional swordsmen who carries 2 swords all the time, everyday and even within touching distance when they sleep.

Ukraine military forces-Post Crimea annexation by Russia

After Russian forces annexed Crimea, Ukraine is facing separatists from Russian speaking threatening to join Russian, as reported by Reuters.

There has not been many major international conflicts between sovereign nations after the Iraqi war.

The strength of the Russian military and its nuclear arsenal gives it complete hegemony in Eastern Europe and around the Black Sea.

Sevastopol, formerly a Soviet base of the Black sea fleet, is a famous military stronghold.

It was fought over by the British, Ottoman Empire and French during the Crimean war.

It was conquer also by Von Manstein's 11th Army which captured the city by siege.

World War 2

It's been like more than 60 years ago.

But looking back, this military conflict changes the fate of nations and superpowers the most. It also affects the most people and the aftermath created the threat or cataclysmic nuclear destruction of earth. Never have a conflict affected so many people and nations. It also killed more civilians than combatants. The homefront was a fair game for the enemy as civilians are targeted, leading to the term total war or total annihilation. It's no longer about seizing natural resources and land.It also became a battle of ideology, fascism (far right) vs. communism (far left). Many mass murder were committed. It's a bloody hell on earth for those who survived the rationing, starvation and suffering.

There are tons of books, novels, reports and news clips/reels today and from that era that continue to fascinate modern readers and students.

Many modern military technologies and tactics were created to kill the most humans efficiently. Quatum leaps in technology were achieved. Rockets to space, jet planes and computers were some of the positive outcome of the conflict.

It's also a military conflict in the full view of history supported by modern technologies like printing press, photography and movies/news reel.

Libyan rebels vs Col. Gaddafi

The conflict in Libya has been reported non-stop by the news up to now. Hence, I like to regurgitate some (already known) facts about this conflict.

Preview:
The Jasmine Revolution of Egypt created an unexpected and shocking developments in the Middle East. Suddenly the people screamed for changes.

Fortunately for Egypt, the change of government is relatively bloodless.

This wind of change blew westward to Libya.

However, the case for Libya has become an outright civil war. The rebels (based on my perception via media like tv and papers)seemed not to have a strong leader or military leadership and seemed like a rabble. (not a fair assessment imho)

The overwhelming firepower of the ruling junta (of Colonel Gaddafi) poses a very serious threat of massacre of the rebels. Hence, a divided United Nations security council imposed a no fly zone and implemented airstrikes on Gaddafi's forces to negate the firepower of Gaddafi's junta.

Libya is no stranger to conflict, as in the past Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Turks, Italians, Germans and the English have fought over its soil.

Only time will tell...of what will happen.

A military history in the making. Probably an autopsy of the Libyan conflict will be written 1-2 years from now. Looking forward to the analysis from the experts, historian.

The conquest of the Aztec Empire by Hernan Cortez

Chance upon this documentary from the BBC.

I think it's a brilliant documentary, which I believed it's pretty accurate in its potrayal of the Aztecs. The battle scenes seemed very realistic and the weapons of the era are well reconstructed. The potryal of the Aztec human sacrifice is in-line with the historical records of the Aztec Codexes. The mindset of the characters are pretty accurate based on historical records. Perhaps, Alvarado should have been taller and show more scenes of Aztec Jaguar and Eagle warriors. But it's a masterpiece of a documentary given its time limit of 1 hour.

The best part is the Tlaxcalan coyote warrior shouting a 'battle cry' and the Tlaxcalan rush forward to attack the Spaniards.

Review
Historical accuracy: 5/5
Characters: 4/5
Drama: 4/5

Aztecs

The clash of the Aztecs with the Spanish conquistador always fascinated me.
The concept of Aztec warfare to capture enemy combatants for human sacrifice puts them in a serious disadvantage vis-a-vis the Spaniards.
